If a specific page on a website does not load for some reason or in case a link is broken, the website visitor will see an error page with some generic message. The page shall have nothing in common with the rest of the site, that may make the visitor leave your website. A likely solution in such a case is a function made available from some web hosting providers - the option to set your own custom error pages that shall have identical design as your Internet site and which may contain any text or images you want based on the specific error. There are four popular errors which could occur and they involve the following so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your Internet browser sends a bad request to the hosting server and it cannot be processed; 401, if you're supposed to log in to see some webpage, but you have not done this yet; 403, if you do not have a permission to view a certain page; and 404, if a link which you've clicked leads to a file which doesn't exist. In any of these scenarios, visitors shall be able to see your customized content as opposed to a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Shared Hosting

You can set up customized error pages for all of your domains or subdomains. The function is supported by all shared hosting package which we provide, so when you log in to the Hepsia Control Panel and check out the Hosted Domains section, you can easily click on the Edit button for a domain/subdomain and in the pop-up which will be displayed, you may pick the type of error page that should show up - a default one from our system, a typical Apache web server page or a customized one. For the last mentioned option, you must specify the URL to the page, so when you use custom made pages, you must upload the files inside your website hosting account first. An alternative way is to use an .htaccess file located in the domain or subdomain folder with a line for every error type. The correct syntax can be seen in our Knowledge Base, so you can use this feature even if you do not have any previous experience.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Hosting

All our Linux semi-dedicated hosting packages support customized error pages, so you shall be able to use this function for each and every domain or subdomain hosted inside your account. All it takes to do that is to check out the Hosted Domains section of the Hepsia Control Panel, to click the Edit button related to the particular domain/subdomain and then to enter the link to the custom file. You can do this separately for each error type. You'll be able to switch back to a standard error page anytime if necessary and the change shall take effect at once. An alternative way to achieve the very same result is to set an .htaccess file in the domain or subdomain folder related to the website that you'd like to modify and to enter a couple of lines of program code within it. If you would like to try this method, you can copy and paste the needed code from our Knowledge Base article on custom error pages, so you'll not need any programming skills or previous experience.
